The F#m chord is the symbol used for the F#m minor chord on the guitar. In this article, we explore the F#m guitar chord.
This is a thee note diatonic chord, also known as triad, which is formed directly from the harmonic field of the F# minor key or A major key (both keys have the same notes).
The notes in the A major key are the following:
A, B, C#, D, E, F#, G#
In the F# minor key, this chord if the first guitar chord of the harmonic field, based on the fundamental.
In the A major key, this is the 6th chord.
Guitar Shapes for the F#m Chord
Depending on the hand position on the guitar neck, the F#m guitar chord can be used in many configurations, as we’ll see below.
The first and most common position is the one with root on the 6th string. Notice that this is a barre chord, or bar chord:
Also, another position that is frequently used for this chord is with the key note in the fourth string, 4th fret:

F#m in Other Harmonic Fields
For your own development, you should learn to use the F#m chord in several contexts, also trying to understand the way it can be applied in different keys.
For example, in the F# minor key, the F#m chord is the fundamental chord.
In the E major key, the F#m is a second chord.
Then, in the D major key, the F#m is a 3rd chord.
In the C# minor key, the F#m is a 4th chord.
Finally, in the A major key, the F#m is a 6th chord.
